Building with wood

Hecker Editorial · 17.07.2026 · 2 min read

A house doesn't have to be too small just because life changes.

Perhaps a larger kitchen is missing. Perhaps the living area is to be opened up to the garden. Perhaps an additional bedroom, an office, or space for the parents is needed.

Then a greenhouse can often be the right solution.

Why we like to use wood for this

Wood is lightweight, flexible, and very easy to pre-fabricate.

This allows us to complete a large part of the work in-house and keep the actual assembly on the existing building relatively short.

This is especially convenient if the house is still occupied during the renovation.

Of course, there are still a number of components involved: foundations, connections to the existing structure, openings, roof, facade and home automation must all work together.

When growing crops, we don’t build on a free field.

We first need to understand how the existing house is built.

Where can we make sense of connections? Which walls can be opened? How does the transition from the old to the new roof work? And how do we keep the building envelope permanently sealed?

Especially at these transitions, there is often more work involved than one sees later on.

For me, a good garden should not look like a box that was once placed in a house.

The old and the new must ultimately belong together.

By the way, the new building component does not necessarily have to have a wooden facade. Whether it’s stucco, wood, panels or metal – what suits the building is crucial.
